2002 Jackson Hole One Fly Event

The Mud Strikes Again

Rain and muddy water hit the One Fly again this year. By the time the contestants made it to the Pacific Creek launch the mud had hit and their options were disappearing. Most of them in that stretch opted to fish what clear water there was before the mud mixed. The clarity of the water depended on how far north you were, but by the end of the day the mud had made it down the entire river. Those fishing the South Fork were the lucky ones, as they were below a dam and there was no mud.

At the awards banquet on Sunday the expression was "Slammin Sammy strikes again." Sam Mavrakis took honors as individual high point winner using an Orange Crush to crush the competition.

2002 One Fly Event Winning Fly

  The Orange Crush

The Orange Crush With the heavy rains turning the Snake off color, it was a challenge to find the right fly. While many anglers went wet with streamers, several anglers chose big dry flies and surprisingly had good luck on a South Fork Chernobyl variation called the Orange Crush. Whether it was the orange body or the way the Sam Paul Mavarakis moved the fly, it worked well enough for him to win his second One Fly individual title. The Orange Crush worked well for many others anglers who chose to use it at least one of their two days on the river. After looking over the totals of fish caught, the Orange Crush was unquestionably the fly of the year. Rubber legs, float bodies and bright colors have lead the way the last few years of the event.
